27th of January 2004 NOMINATION It is my
great honour to nominate the Cuban human right activist Mr Oswaldo Paya
Sardinas, Havana, for the Nobel Prize 2004. Since
1987 Mr Oswaldo Paya Sardinas has led an organisation working peacefully for
profound changes of the Cuban political and economic system. Two years ago he
created the Varela project, a broad coalition of democratic forces which has
collected more than 11 000 signatures in favour of a national referendum on
political reform in Cuba. Despite continuos harassment and persecution by the
Cuban regime, Mr Paya has succeeded in establishing an alternative for Cubans,
working for freedom, democracy and human rights. Many of his colleagues have
been sentenced to prison but so far Mr Paya has not been imprisoned. Oswaldo
Paya Sardinas represents for Cubans a civilised hope for democracy and his brave
efforts deserve support and global attention. By awarding him the Nobel Peace
Prize it would be an encouragement not only to Mr Paya Sardinas, but also to all
those Cubans who strive to liberate their country by peaceful means and dialogue
with no regard to their personal freedom or safety. Yours
Sincerely Dr.
Cecilia Malmström Member of the European Parliament
