LESS POTATOES THIS YEAR 

            Havana – Due to the high costs of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, this year will be reduced the areas destined to cultivate potatoes, according to the official press. The Cuban farmers must finish sowing the tubercle on the first days of January, according to the crop’s chronogram, and thus they find themselves in a true race against the clock, since supplies came up late and in minor quantities than required.  

YOUNGSTERS ARRESTED AND FINED FOR PROTESTS 

            Morón – After a citizens’ protest for the eviction of four families living in a hotel in ruins in this city, various local youngsters who gave support to the affected parties were arrested and fined afterwards. Local police forces tried to make them sign a ¨public disorder¨ minutes, to which they refused, explaining that they only had expressed their feelings on the Cuban reality. The young men, named Orvey Fernández Pardo and Agustín Sabina, were left in jail for almost 24 hours. 

INCREASES ROBBERY OF MERCHANDISE IN GROCERY STORES  

            Ciego de Avila – Numerous grocery stores in this area are having “missings”, which is the word used in Cuba to denominate merchandise robberies. Among them, stands out the “Héctor Figueredo” store, where it is reported the loss of products like rice, meat and coffee, as informed by the same customers who have to shop in this establishment according to their rationing card. However, the provincial distribution unit of Ciego de Avila, responsible of delivering such products to the stores, does not acknowledge any responsibility for such “missings”. 

DISSATISFACTION AMONG THE POPULATION WITH THE NEW CHINESE BUSES 

            Ciego de Avila – Independent journalists from this area carried out an inquiry, for three days, with travelers awaiting for buses in the special transportation points, where state inspectors detain cars, trucks and buses, forcing them to carry a certain number of passengers, in order to alleviate the transport crisis. In general, those interviewed expressed their dissatisfaction with the new Chinese buses, Yutong brand, which travel half-empty from Ciego de Avila, provincial capital, up to Morón, and do not pick up passengers in such loading points. 

A CHAIN OF PRAYERS FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS 

            Morón – Opponents, dissidents and independent journalists from this area will celebrate a chain of prayers in favor of the political prisoners now in Cuban jails. The event will take place from November 30th to December 10th, which is the 58th anniversary of the Universal Human Rights Declaration. Its purpose will be to ask the Cuban government for consideration on the repression taking place against peaceful opponents and independent journalists, which has increased since the spring of 2003.
