PRESS CENSORS REJECTION OF CUBAN AMBASSADOR
Havana - The official press media, which usually gives a
great coverage to any Cuban related activity taking place in Venezuela,
totally silenced the rejection that Germán Sánchez Otero, representative
of the Cuban Embassy in Caracas, received at Los Teques, in Venezuela’s
Miranda state. The Cuban diplomat was attending the 78th
anniversary celebration of famous partisan fighter Ernesto ¨Che¨ Guevara,
when he found himself confronted by local officers and citizens.
FREE GLASSES FOR ECUADOR-NOT FOR CUBA
Havana – The Island’s residents were amazed to find that
the government would guarantee their lenses to patients attending the two
ophthalmologic hospitals recently donated to Ecuador, which were
inaugurated by Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage. Cubans requiring the use
of lenses have to wait for months in order to get them, although not
always the right measure of augmentation exists and they generally have to
obtain them thanks to some relative living abroad.
COLOMBIAN PRESIDENT MAY VISIT CUBA
Havana – Cuba and Colombia’s foreign offices are working
together in order to organize a meeting between Presidents Alvaro Uribe
and Fidel Castro, to take place on the next days, in Havana, and it is not
discarded that it could happen before August 7th, when the
Colombian President initiates his second term in office. The main subject
which Uribe would discuss with Castro would be related to the peaceful
overtures taking place in Havana, by the National Liberation Army (in
Spanish, ELN) and the Colombian executive.
FAST BY PEACEFUL OPPONENTS IN ISLA DE PINOS
Nueva Gerona – Peaceful opponents to Fidel Castro’s
government carried out a 24-hour fasting in Isla de Pinos, in solidarity
with independent journalist Guillermo Fariñas Hernández, who is in serious
condition at Santa Clara’s Provincial Hospital, after going on a hunger
strike since last January 31st, claiming access to Internet.
The fasting in Isla de Pinos was summoned by the independent libraries’
projects, the ¨Julio Tang Texier¨ Cultural Civic Center, the Isla de Pinos
Human Rights Foundation and the ¨José Martí¨ Youth Coalition.
INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY ON BASEBALL CLASSIC
Havana – An independent documentary about the world’s
baseball classic, which took place on last March, totally produced in
Spanish, has become a most wanted product by Cuban video fans. The
material which was produced in Spain and lasts for over 50 minutes,
contains never before seen interviews with some of the Cuban players
involved in the tournament, and also some scenes from the game between the
Cuban selection and the American team ¨Baltimore Orioles¨, which took
place in 1999.
OPPONENT THREATENED WITH DEATH
Santiago de Cuba – Opponent Israel Folgar was threatened
with beatings and even with death by Popular Power (the government)
representatives at the ¨Paquito Rosales¨ sugar mill, in San Luis
Municipality, in this province. José Frómeta, President of the Local
Government Council and Raúl Bandera, a low rank officer, made such threats
as a result of a repudiation act against members of the Independent
Peasants League, who were carrying out a fasting in solidarity with
journalist Guillermo Fariñas Hernández, who is agonizing after a long
hunger strike.
TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND LATIN AMERICAN YOUNGSTERS WILL STUDY IN CUBA
Havana – According to the government, following the
principle of ¨solidarity among peoples¨, 200 thousand students,
originating from humble families in Latin America, will travel to Havana,
with the purpose of studying medicine and other specialties. In order to
have access to these scholarships, conceived till now for young people
from Venezuela and Bolivia, the students must have good academic grades
and to prove they come from rural areas and marginal zones in those
countries. Independent observers found the report to be highly exagerated,
and the number of students greatly inflated, and cited that the Cuban
university system lacks facilities to handle and provide room and board
for so many students. Although a high academic level is maintained in many
areas, the Cuban university system lacks many basic facilities and
services for Cuban students.
