CARTA DE PAQUITO D'RIVERA A LA REVISTA "JAZZ TIMES"

Esta carta habla por si sola. La reproducimos en el inglés original.

May23-03

As a regular reader of Jazz Times magazine, I
've noticed that your publication is heavily promoting cultural tourism to (what is left of) my homeland, Cuba.

Totally convinced that my words are not going to change anything at all, at least I want to call to your attention the fact that last year was the time when more Cuban artists from both sides of the Florida straits obtained more GRAMMYs and Latin GRAMMY awards and nominations in the most diverse categories than in  any other period in history. Among them Celia Cruz, Omar Sosa, Nilo Castillo, Rey Guerra, Albita, Jorge Moreno, Bebo and Chucho Vald
és. I wonder if are you guys aware that, as usual, none of the exiled Cuban artists were mentioned at all by the cultural officials of the longest dictatorship on earth (43 years!), and while deservingly celebrating Chucho's many achievements in his career, nobody even  pronounced  the venerable name of his very own father Bebo, who by the way went home to Stockholm carrying two of those awards for his formidable CD
"El Arte del Sabor", accompanied by other three compatriots, "Patato" Valdés, El Gran Cachao and myself.
It is true that those days when Jazz was
"a four letter word
" in my country and we had to hide to listen to Willis Conover's radio show are gone now, but please keep in mind that while you guys are jammin' with Cuban musicians, eating at restaurants where natives are not permitted, or visiting some school from Castro's famous free education system, only a few weeks ago, 3 young Afro-Cubans died by firing squad just for stealing a boat, and 28 independent writers, among them the great poet and Jazz fan Raul Rivero are serving 20 years of imprisonment just for doing what they were trained for, writing.
Have a nice trip!
